About the First Peoples Program
The First Peoples: Tell Us a Story initiative is a specialized professional development program designed to build bridges between First Peoples and Radio-Canada. It aims to amplify Indigenous voices in the media while nurturing lasting, reciprocal relationships with Indigenous communities.
Building on the success of its 2025 pilot, the initiative returns this year with a redesigned format. This paid training opportunity has been expanded to eight (8) weeks and will focus on the craft of storytelling. Throughout the program, you will hone your skills through hands-on workshops led by both Indigenous and non-Indigenous media professionals. You will also have a dedicated platform to share your stories, showcase your culture, language and lived experiences, and highlight your community's achievements.
We are looking for four (4) individuals from First Nations, Inuit or Métis communities ready to take the next step in their media careers.
The program runs full time for eight (8) weeks, from February 1st to March 26, 2027. Full-time availability, Monday to Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. (ET) for the entire eight-week program is mandatory.
This program is in hybrid mode (remote work with required travel to Montreal and a regional station).
Candidates must meet the following eligibility requirements:
- Be 18 years of age or older.
- Self-identify as First Nations, Inuit or Métis.
- Be available full time for the duration of the program (February 1st to March 26, 2027).
- Be willing and able to travel for three (3) separate five-day sessions during the eight (8) weeks (travel and accommodation expenses are fully covered by Radio-Canada).
- Be able to work and communicate in French (reading, writing and speaking).
Who You Are:
- You have a working proficiency in French across speaking, reading and writing.
- You have a genuine curiosity about news and current affairs, paired with a passion for storytelling.
- You have an open, collaborative attitude.
- You are eager to learn new things.
- Familiarity with Google Workspace tools is an asset.
Program Overview:
As part of this second cohort, you will complete an eight-week learning curriculum running from February 1st to March 26, 2027.
The program includes the following:
- Orientation and Onboarding: Settle into the cohort and preview your training plan through a combination of virtual sessions and in-person activities in Montreal.
- Theory Instruction (Three (3) weeks, Virtual): Build foundational journalism skills across digital writing, audio/radio storytelling and video production, culminating in one (1) to three (3) portfolio-ready pieces.
- Regional Station Placement: Shadow and work alongside Radio-Canada journalists at a regional station to experience the day-to-day rhythm of an active newsroom.
- Professional Development (Virtual): Take part in sessions designed to support your learning and development.
- Closing Week (Montreal): Wrap up the program alongside your peers with a final week of hands-on activities.
Workplace and Technical Requirements :
The theory instruction will take place primarily online; however, you must be available to travel to Montreal and to a regional station during designated periods. All required travel and accommodation expenses are fully covered by Radio-Canada.
Please note:
- You must have access to a reliable, high-speed internet connection.
- You must have access to a desktop computer, laptop or iPad Pro.
- Any specialized production gear required for your training modules will be provided by Radio-Canada for the duration of the program.
Full-time availability for the entire eight-week program is mandatory.
